It is not your internet. It is the distance and the walls.
Your provider sold you a fast connection, and it is fast at the box. The problem is what happens between that box and the back bedroom. Paying for a bigger package will not change it.
Almost always one of these four.
One router, wrong place
It usually sits where the cable came into the house, which is a corner of the basement. The signal then has to cross the whole building on the diagonal, through everything in the way.
What the walls are made of
Drywall is kind to Wi-Fi. Lath and plaster, brick, concrete and foil-backed insulation are not. Older Calgary homes are full of them.
Plumbing and mirrors
Radio treats a wet wall or a big mirror as a solid wall. Neither one shows up on a floor plan.
Everyone else’s Wi-Fi
On a busy street the 2.4GHz band is crowded. Your phone clings to a weak connection instead of giving up. That feels worse than no signal at all.
What does not fix it.
- A faster internet package. If the signal cannot reach the room, more speed at the box does nothing in that room.
- A Wi-Fi extender. It repeats a weak signal and halves the speed while doing it. It turns no signal into a bad signal, which is sometimes worse.
- A more expensive router. A better radio in the same bad spot is still in the same bad spot.
- Powerline adapters. They help now and then. How well they work depends on how the house is wired, so we rarely design around them.
Put the signal where the people are.
Put an access point in the right place and run a wire from it back to the router. That is the whole answer, and it is dull. One or two access points in the right spots will beat any mesh kit. Each one has a real wired connection back, instead of repeating the next one along.
The work is getting the wire there. In a finished house that comes down to which route does the least damage. It is usually gentler than people expect. We use existing chases, closets, cold air returns and the attic before anyone talks about opening a wall.
Mesh is not cheating, it is a compromise
Wireless mesh is useful where a wire truly cannot go. Every hop between units costs you speed and adds delay, so mesh is the fallback rather than the plan. Anyone selling it as the first answer is selling you the easy install, not the better result.

How many access points does a house need?
It comes from what the house is built of and how it is laid out, not from square footage. A small two storey in drywall might need one, put in the right spot. A 1960s bungalow with plaster and a detached garage might need three. That is why we plan it from the drawings instead of guessing.
Do I need to replace my provider’s router?
Not always. Often it stays and does its job while access points handle coverage. The audit tells us which. If old gear still works, we leave it alone.
Can you do this without wrecking the house?
That is the design question, and it is the one we spend the most time on. We pick the routes that do the least damage, and we agree them with you before anyone starts.
What does it cost to find out?
The residential design assessment is $299 for a home up to roughly 3,500 sq ft, and it is credited against the install if you go ahead within 60 days.
