Keys have one problem you cannot design around: you cannot un-issue one. Someone leaves and you either trust them or re-key the building. A credential you can revoke in two seconds fixes that, and it runs on the same app as your cameras.

The range

A door needs two boxes, not one.

This is the single most common surprise on a quote. A reader on the wall, and a hub inside that actually throws the lock. The hub goes where nobody can reach it, because if the thing that opens the door were on the outside wall, prying it off would open the door.

How it fits

What a working door actually costs.

  • The reader. The part on the wall. Card, phone tap, PIN or fingerprint.
  • The hub. Separate, mounted inside, and it is what releases the lock.
  • The strike or lock. Separate again, and fail secure or fail safe is a decision, not a default.
  • The wiring. Relay cable to the lock, network cable to the reader. Often the biggest line on the job.
  • Egress hardware. Usually a door contractor’s work rather than ours. See the note below.
  • The credentials. Cards or phone passes, priced per person.

The safety point, and it is not a preference

Our standard is fail secure: a power cut leaves the building locked. That makes the way OUT a mechanical job. A push bar or push pad that retracts the latch by the physical act of pushing, with no power, no network and no device involved. The failure you design for is all of them at once, and someone who has never been in the building is walking at that door. It must open when they push. We are not a code authority, and your local code and Authority Having Jurisdiction are the ones who decide what your building requires.
