Every UniFi Wi-Fi 7 access point, side by side.

They all run Wi-Fi 7 and they all work from the same app. What changes is how much radio you get, what shape it comes in, and how much power the switch has to feed it. That last one decides which switch you buy.

The short answer

Three access points cover most buildings.

MOST HOMES AND SMALL OFFICES

U7 Pro

The default ceiling access point. PoE+ at 21 W. Enough radio for a floor of a house or a small office.

ONE ROOM, SMALL BUDGET

U7 Lite

Standard PoE at 13 W, so it runs on almost any PoE switch. Fine for a flat or a single room.

AT THE DESK, IN THE WALL

U7 In-Wall

Fits a wall box and gives you three wired ports at the desk. Access point and small switch in one.

Best for A flat, a single room, a small shop. The floor of the Wi-Fi 7 line. Hotel rooms, offices, a desk that needs wired ports and Wi-Fi from one cable. A big open room, a warehouse floor, a hall. Fewer access points, further apart. The default. One per floor of a house, one per few rooms in an office. Rooms with no ceiling access. Hallways. Where the cable comes out of a wall box. A ceiling access point where the switch behind it is 10 gigabit. Rare in a house, common in a new office. Busy rooms. A clinic waiting area, a restaurant, a classroom. A garage, a shed, a patio, a spot with power but no cable. Cable it if you can. A yard, a patio, a parking area, a shop front. Outdoor coverage where it has to work: a yard with a pool, a patio bar, a lot. A dense office or a venue with a 10 gigabit switch behind it. A hall, a lecture room, a busy venue. Hundreds of devices under one unit.

Step by step

What the next dollar buys you.

Read down the list. Each line is what you gain by moving up one model.

  1. $151 all-in

Step up to U7 In-Wall: +$80 A wall box shape with three wired ports at the desk. Same radio, same power.

  2. $231 all-in

Step up to U7 Long-Range: The ceiling shape with more radio: six streams, PoE+ at 21 W.

  3. Step up to U7 Pro: More radio and the PoE+ step: six streams at 21 W. The default for most buildings.

  4. $257 all-in

Step up to U7 Pro Wall: +$33 The same radio class in a wall plate, for where a ceiling mount is not possible.

  5. $290 all-in

Step up to U7 Pro XG: +$17 A 10 gigabit port instead of 2.5, for the few places the cable back to the switch can carry it.

  6. $307 all-in

Step up to U7 Pro Max: A step in radio. Six streams at 25 W, still 2.5 gigabit.

  7. Step up to U7 Mesh: A mesh model that can run with no cable at all.

  8. $307 all-in

Step up to U7 Outdoor: A proper outdoor unit with more radio, PoE+ at 19 W.

  9. Step up to U7 Pro Outdoor: Two watts more radio. The Pro version of the same box.

  10. $431 all-in

Step up to U7 Pro XGS: The PoE++ step. A 10 gigabit port and 29 W of radio.

  11. Step up to E7: The most radio Ubiquiti makes for a ceiling. Ten streams, 43 W.

What every access point needs

Two things, and one of them is a trap.

1

A cable to the ceiling

One network cable from the switch to where the access point mounts. It carries power and data. Ceiling is best. A shelf is a compromise that costs you coverage.

2

A switch port with enough power

This is the trap. The U7 Lite and In-Wall run on standard PoE. Everything from the U7 Pro up needs PoE+. The Pro XGS and E7 need PoE++. Eight Lites is 104 W. Eight E7s is 344 W, which is more than most small switches can give. Pick the access point, then check the switch. See switches.

3

Walls, not datasheets

How far Wi-Fi reaches is set by what the walls are made of and where the access point sits, not by the model. Drywall is easy. Concrete, brick and lath and plaster eat signal. That is what a site walk is for.

Before you ask

Common questions.

How many access points do I need?

It depends on the walls more than the floor area. One U7 Pro per floor is a fair start for a drywall house. Concrete, brick or plaster can double that. We measure on a site walk rather than guess.

Why does the switch matter?

The access point is powered by the switch through the cable. The U7 Lite and In-Wall need standard PoE. The Pro line needs PoE+. The XGS and E7 need PoE++. Add up the watts and the switch has to cover it. That one line item can turn one new access point into a new switch too.

Can I skip the cable and use mesh?

You can, with the U7 Mesh. It works. It also halves the speed and adds delay on the hop, so it is the fix for a room you cannot cable, not the plan for a building.

Do you install these?

Yes. We plan the placement, pull the cable, mount the access points and set up the network. Book a design assessment and the fee comes off the install.

Want it picked and installed?

Book a design assessment. We walk the building, place the access points where the walls allow, check the switch can power them, and quote it. The fee comes off the install.
