You do not have to know the words

Most people arrive here able to describe the problem perfectly well and completely unable to name it. That is normal, and it is not a problem.

“The upstairs is terrible.” “I want to see who is at the door.” “The office wireless dies every afternoon.” “We are renovating and someone said to run cable now.” Every one of those is a complete, useful description. You do not need to know what a gateway is, or a VLAN, or what PoE stands for. That is somebody else’s job.

Say it however it comes out. The right questions get asked back.

What happens when you get in touch

  1. You describe the problem in your own words. No form full of technical fields.
  2. You get asked some questions. What the building is, what is already there, what you want it to do.
  3. You get told what it would take, in plain English, including when the answer is smaller or cheaper than you expected.
  4. If it is worth doing, you get a proper design, on paper, before anything is installed. If it is not, you get told that instead.

That conversation is free, including the version where it ends with “you do not need us”.

Three ways to work together

Whatever the job, there are three routes, and they are a menu rather than a ladder.

  • Take the plan and do it yourself. You get a real design and you go and build it. No pressure and no hard feelings.
  • Do the physical work yourself, have it configured for you. You pull the cable, someone else sets the system up properly, remotely.
  • Hand over the whole thing. Designed, installed, configured, tested, labelled, documented.

Two things worth knowing before you talk to anyone

Equipment is sold at cost here. The manufacturer’s price, nothing added. The charge is for design, configuration and labour. That is deliberate: when the person choosing your equipment does not profit from the equipment, “you do not need that one” costs them nothing to say.

Sometimes the answer is no. If what you want is not the right fit, you will be told, and pointed at what is. That happens often enough to be worth mentioning.
