Client handbook, section 5 of 10

UniFi Access. Cards, fobs, PINs and phones that open your doors.

Every person who opens a door needs two things: who they are (a user) and when and where they are allowed in (a policy). Then you give them a key: a card, a fob, a PIN, or their phone.

Add a person

  1. Open Access > People > Create New.
  2. Enter their name and email. Save.

(If you already added them in People on unifi.ui.com, they are already here.)

Check they have a policy. A person with no policy cannot open any door. If your system has a default policy, new people get it automatically. If not, open Settings > Policies & Schedules and add them to the right one.

Add a card or fob

UniFi cards and fobs are set up the same way. You need the card in your hand and a reader nearby.

  1. Open Access > Settings > Card Inventory > Add New > Add NFC Card.
  2. Pick the reader you are standing at. Click Continue.
  3. Hold the card or fob flat on the reader for 5 seconds.
  4. Follow the prompts to finish.

Then give it to someone:

  1. Open People, click the person, then Settings > Credentials > NFC Card.
  2. Click + and choose Select Existing Card. Pick the card you just added.

Write the card’s number on a sticker on the back before you hand it out. It makes a lost card easy to find in the list.

Give someone a PIN

  1. People > the person > Settings > Credentials > PIN > +.
  2. Type a PIN, or let the system make one. Click Add.

Each person gets one PIN. Keep PINs personal; a shared PIN means you cannot tell who came in.

Let someone use their phone

There are two ways, and your system may use either.

  • UniFi Endpoint app: the person gets an invite email, installs the app, and taps a button (or taps their phone on the reader) to unlock.
  • Apple Wallet or Google Wallet (Touch Pass): the key sits in their phone’s wallet, like a transit card. They tap the phone on the reader. It works even with the phone locked.

To send a Touch Pass:

  1. People > the person > Settings > Credentials > Touch Pass > +.
  2. Click Apply Changes, then Send Invitation.

Your console comes with a few free Touch Passes. After that, Ubiquiti charges a small yearly fee per person, and only the Owner can buy more. Ask us before you run out.

Lost card, fob or phone

Act the same day.

  • Card or fob: open the person, go to Credentials > NFC Card, and remove that card. Then add a new one.
  • Phone with Touch Pass: open the person’s Touch Pass and choose Suspend (stops it working) or Unbind (removes it from that phone).
  • Someone leaving: remove the person entirely. Every key they had stops working at once.
